There are thousands of opportunities for science teachers to participate in workshops and classes that broaden science knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, or both. Some offer graduate credit, others offer Continuing Education Units (CEU’s), and some will even pay you for participating. The Science Ambassador Program

Short Description: The Science Ambassador Program provides the opportunity for selected middle and high school science teachers to collaborate with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) scientists on epidemiologic-based lesson plans. The program begins with a workshop that provides the foundation for the lesson plans being developed throughout the rest of the program. During this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to tour selected CDC facilities, including the CDC Global Health Odyssey; participate in presentations by CDC scientists on public health-related topics; receive training from Georgia Learning Connections (GLC) professionals on developing and delivering effective lesson plans; and receive educational materials from GLC and CDC.

Paddle Georgia is a weeklong, 92-mile canoe/kayak voyage down the Coosawattee and Oostanaula rivers from Ellijay to Rome. Participants will paddle an average of 13 miles each day and along the way visit historic sites, state parks and natural areas. Each night, participants will be shuttled to campsites at local schools and other facilities where educational programs, games, entertainment and meals will be provided. NOAA's Teacher at Sea Program

Location:
Participants are assigned a cruise aboard one of NOAA's 19 ships (or a chartered partner ship). NOAA conducts three main types of cruises. Fisheries research ships, Oceanographic and coastal research ships, and Hydrographic survey ships.
Dates (include year):
Participants will be at sea anywhere from one week to one month, with the average cruise lasting 12-14 days. Most of our participants try to sail on cruises offered during the summer vacation, but cruises take place throughout most of the year on a space-available basis.
Short Description:
The mission of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Teacher at Sea (TAS) program is to give teachers a clearer insight into our ocean planet, a greater understanding of maritime work and studies, and to increase their level of environmental literacy by fostering an interdisciplinary research experience. The program provides a unique environment for learning and teaching by sending kindergarten through college-level teachers to sea aboard NOAA research and survey ships to work under the tutelage of scientists and crew. Then, armed with new understanding and experience, teachers bring this knowledge back to their classrooms.

All necessary travel costs are paid for by NOAA's Teacher at Sea Program.
Stipend?
While airfare is paid for up front by the government, all other costs are reimbursed, including transportation costs, hotel costs, and per diem allowance.
